If you suddenly have a hard transmission problem, the chances of an electronic part controlling the shifting such as a pressure switch or a shift solenoid malfunction is quite high. Fixing them is significantly cheaper than fixing the transmission.

That would give a code. At least it would in my 1995 Escort, but that uses EEC-IV, not OBD2. It doesn't light up any bulb, I had to manually check for codes. And it actually still works, but in the "minimum drivability" mode (more often called "limp home" mode) where I only get 1st and 3rd gears.

I would check the fluid level and the linkage. Also, if the fluid has never been changed you are way overdue.

I have around 208,500 miles on my Escort's original automatic transmission, and once I replace a solenoid, the transmission will work perfectly again.

UPDATE:
i went to drive the car and the car SLIPS horribly in "D"
However, when the transmission is put in "1" or "2" there is no slipping and it picks up perfectly.
Anyone know why it slips severely in D, but there is no slipping in "1" or "2"?
Also, how much do you think i can sell this car for in its current condition?

Assuming that it has no motor/transmission mount or linkage problem, I would be checking the transmission oil pressure. Have you checked for TSB's on this transmission?

Whatever the car is worth (according to KBB/NADA/Craigslist searches) minus the cost of a new transmission, or $400, whichever is higher.

I assume that you mean slips horribly when taking off from a stop, not inbetween gears?

Did you check the transmission fluid level when you got it back?

Have you tried the brake fluid trick?
