I wonder who owns the intellectual property for these new design winglets?

There was a documentary I saw once on building Boeing 747's (I think) and it talked about "Jack the winglet guy" or whatever his real name was, who brings a pair of winglets to every aircraft going through the plant and installs them. He's the only guy that touches them before and the only guy who installs them.

Now, that's not just an interesting job, it's a side effect of the fact that Boeing didn't own the winglet design. I worked with a guy once whose dad worked for the company that owned the patent on Boeing's winglets. They buy winglets from a supplier who makes them under licenses. The patent owner made a lot of money from the winglet design.
