Hello,

I'm seeking advice about what engine oil should I put in my next oil change.

1. What kind of vehicle you have
2004 Hyundai Tiburon GT V6 6Speed.

2. What your owner's manual says -- not just viscosity, but certifications (look for acronyms like API SM, ILSAC GF-4, etc.) and change intervals as well
Manual recommendation:-

Viscosity:-
Cold climates (38C/100F or lower):- 5W30 or 5W40.
Normal climates (-23C/-9F or higher):- 10W30, 10W40 or 10W50.
Hot climates (0C/32F or higher):- 20W40 or 20W50.

Certification:-
SH, SG or SG/CD (API) is recommended.

Change interval:-
7500 Miles/12000 Kilometers for regular use.
3000 Miles/5000 Kilometers for severe conditions (Short trips, too much idling, dust, too much city driving in hot weather or Towing).

3. Where you live
Bahrain.

4. How you drive (easy? hard? fast? slow?)
Most of the time I drive faster than the traffic so I won't say I drive my car hard, also I rarely go above 75MPH/120KPH.
Sometimes (Like once a week), I drive hard for a couple of minutes.

5. What your daily drive is like (short trips? long trips? city? highway?)
Short trips mostly, about %70-%75 city driving on average, I rarely go in a long trips.

6. Whether your car has any known problems
No problems.

I've been using Castrol GTX 20W-50 for the past 25000Miles/40000 Kilometers.

Weather in Bahrain is as follows:-
Jan & Feb:- 8C/47F to 20C/68F.
Mar & Apr:- 15C/59F to 29C/85F.
May & Jun:- 26C/79F to 36C/98F.
Jul & Aug:- 30C/87F to 40C/104F.
Sep & Oct:- 26C/78F to 37C/98F.
Nov & Dec:- 16C/61F to 28C/82F.

Very high humidity most of the year.

Sorry about the long thread, I had to make sure that I mention everything.

What kinds of oil can you get in Bahrain?

With short trips, you want to go a bit thinner, and the Hyundai V-6 isn't hard on oil, so I'd imagine a quality 10W-30 should do fine, year-round.

Nice description, it is good to cover all of the bases...lol

I will tell you right now, in the US we are used to running thinner oils (even in the same engine you have), I would run the best quality 5w30 or 5w40 that you can find. I would use an API SM or SN rated oil. If you can find Mobil 1, Castrol (the best brand they have), any other major producer. YOU DO NOT NEED 20w50! Make sure you keep up with the other maintenance too, air filter, spark plugs, transmission and you should be fine.

What good brand oils are over in Bahrain?

The car is properly maintained, have an Injen CAI and bought NGK Iridium plugs with Nology wires since the summer but I'm just too lazy to install.

BTW the car did 56K miles/90K Kilometers.

Anyway here in Bahrain we do have known brands like Castrol, Motorcraft, Liqui Moly, Shell, but the problem is most of the oils available are 20W-50.

I remember the Castrol Magnatec 10W-40, also the Lexus oil which is also 10W-40.

Its 7AM here so shops are closed still, I'll go to few shops later and take a note about what brand/model/rating they have and I'll post back.

I appreciate the help guys.

Based on your owner's manual recommendations and your climate, I'd say Shell Rotella T6 5w-40.

How short are your "short trips?" Fewer than 10 miles?

You could easily go 10W-40 year-round over there.
