I asked this question back a year ago and got no response. I think the topic was so new...that folks just didn't know.

So here is the deal.... I know that the Ford and Chevy Pickups...the Diesels have Urea injection systems and require...as VW/Audi calls it....AddBlu.

Both of those trucks are perfectly fine with Rotella synthetic 5w40.

So....I know that the DPF is kinda the issue.

What are your thoughts on using Rotella Synthetic 5w40 on the newer European Diesel rigs.....Touareg, A7, X5, 320D, etc....

Seems that T6 can be had for about $5 a quart....which beats the heck out of my VW dealer price for Castrol at $11.50 a quart.

By the way....yes, I run 10K OCI's in my Touareg....since it has a 9 quart sump.

Very important to make sure you are using an APPROVED VW oil.

If you are NOT and you have engine issues they MAY not cover it during the warranty period.

I would stick to reccomended one whether its under warranty or not, thats an expensive engine and diesels are not cheap to maintain but it sure beats ruining it especially after warranty is up.

Look at
http://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/bevolistenmain.php?session_id=&navigation_path=&language_id=1
Sheet 223.2, page 3.
228.51 oils ARE allowed in MB car type AdBlu/DPF engines, 228.31 oils are NOT.
228.51 are ACEA E6 oils, unobtainium in the US. 228.31 include the ubiquitous CJ4 oils. Differences: both have 228.51 An example is what I am running in my X5 35d BMW diesel:
Delvac 1 LE 5W30
http://www.mobil.com/Italy-English/Lubes/PDS/GLXXENCVLMOMobil_Delvac_1_LE_5W-30.aspx
purchased from Scotland in 5x20L jugs at $20/L including air freight.
You could PROBABLY safely run this oil in a 507 spec TDI - but I'm not sure. I'm sure enough about the similarities between MB and BMW emission systems to feel OK about running it in the BMW.
The Delvac 1 LE has a TBN of 12.6, the dealer supplied Castrol SLX Professional OE 5W30 is 6.4. Need I say more? My UOAs on the SLX were quite poor.

By the way, ACEA C3 oils which are the basis of 507 and BMW LL04 and M1 ESP 5W30 are 700 When I explained all this to my local BMW dealer and showed him my bad UOAs, they let me use D1 LE and stay under warranty.
I hope.

Charla where a th uoas on the M1? Also, do trucks meeting the E6 requirement have the same emissions restraints a passenger cars/trucks? Do you know if the DPF used by MB trucks is the same as their passenger cars? IIRC you were not happy with the TAN readings on re SLX. what are they on the M1?

I haven't changed the oil yet on the Delvac 1; because of the high TBN I'm going to push it out a bit to 13-14000 miles.
The MB operating fluids site I cited states CAR-type diesels can use 228.51 approved E6 oils. Most likely because of their similarities to the C3 oils.
Truck emission regs are in gm/kw-hr; car regs are in gm/km.
But p.3 Sheet 223.2 clearly states 228.51/E6 oils are OK in car type DPF/AdBlu diesels. At least for MB.

I appreciate the feedback and all good information.

Sure, the right thing to do, especially during the warranty period...is to stay with 507. And I suppose I will buy the M1 from PepBoys in the end. I just had to ask the question regarding synthetic HD oils.

For what it is worth, my Touareg has had a steady diet of the Castrol from the dealer (because of the free service through 30k). So, I am running the 10K OCI's and in that amount of time I am having to top off about 1/2 a liter at the 8k mark. She currently has 29,600 on her and will go in for her 30K next week. After that service, I will be changing the oil myself....as my dealer charges $150. Hopefully I can buy the M1 and filter for about $85 (9 quarts).

I suppose I shouldn't try to pinch pennies on an oil change that is already going 10k miles.

I'm pretty sure the only E6/MB228.51 HDEO sold in the US is the new Valvoline Ultramax 10W40, sold in europe as Profleet LS 10W40.
It has a TBN of 12, but rated as E6 has the same low sulfur and P concentration of the 507 oil, though it is 1.0% ash instead of ~0.65%.
I would use it only if UOAs show TBN depletion. It certainly won't save you money. It would be an excellent candidate of extended OCIs if you are inclined to do so.

T6 is also way heavier than necessary.
For example it's 25% heavier than M1 0W-40 at room temp's, 35% at 32F and even more so as temp's drop below freezing.
Since M1 0W-40 is often on sale in the 5-6 buck/qt range it's a hard value to beat.

Except that M1 0W40 is not a low SAPS oil as is 507 or 228.51 oils discussed.

505.00 hasn't been a current spec for TDIs since 2003. The new CR TDIs spec 507.00.

I would also personally use Mobil 1 ESP Formula M 5w40 in a CR TDI or any of the quality MB 229.51 oils. Amsoil has a 'recommended for 507.00' oil out there that I would also consider... but I'm sticking with my VE & PD engines for now.
