Last September I wrecked my truck. The front bumper was pushed into the passenger side tire and left a pretty deep cut in the tread. I looked at the damage then and it didn't seem that bad, and I couldn't see down to the belts, so I kept driving on it. During this entire time I never had to add air to the tire. I regularly checked the pressure and it was always right where it should be.

During the past three weeks or so, it has been very hot here. Pavement temps are definitely well over 100* during the day. I took at look at the gash in the tire this weekend. It had nearly doubled in size, and when I pushed it open, I could clearly see the belts in the tire.

The truck is riding on the new full size spare right now(actually new, not a 10 year old unused tire), I'm not risking a blowout, even on a tire that isn't leaking.

Moral of the story, even if a tire was damaged many months and miles before and has been holding air doesn't mean it is okay.

Here is a pic of the damage...
