Subaru boxer diesel MY10 factory fill UOA - 4k mi

We had lots of issues with SLX and with Castrols in general in Poland (mainly cheap GIII) but maybe it was our local blend - for many years even blended in Poland, now we can buy it from Germany but also very cheap and poor quality - hard to believe it is original ;-(
In my opinion when you run longlife using low saps / low TBN oil then TAN is more representative than TBN and in fact even not only low saps / low TBN but in general longlife - example:
after 10k miles (gasoline engine) on AMSOIL SSO 0W-30 TBN is 4,6 (one of UOA I know - virgin oil has TBN=13,2) so it is really a very strong oil but using dirty sulfur fuel or LPG we can have much higher TAN very soon - I'm sending another sample of this used oil to Blackstone to check TAN additionally.

How is your DPF doing on the Delvac? We tested AMSOIL DEO CJ-4 on Subaru Boxer diesel with no DPF issues or even increased soot level at DPF - so I think that not only saps % is a key but quality of oil (base) as well. Nevertheless there was significant difference in soot level on Subaru Boxer diesel DPF (~500km test) between 5W-30 low saps and 5W-40 API SL "conventional" saps oils (both Shell - 5W-30 was GIII/GIV synthetic and 5W-40 typical GIII).

Just to throw another thing out there... there is a lot of sulfur in most if not all engine oils to begin with... 2000 ppm is not uncommon. It is used as a building block of anti-wear additive. Is this a different type of sulfur than the one found in gasoline? I'm guessing so.

Of course the sulfur molecules are different in fuels vs. lubes. but when burned (oxidized), sulfur is sulfur.

There were some issues with these diesels in EU, even in Germany - probably it was too risky to offer it on US market and lose quite good reputation...
In Poland main concern is diesel fuel quality which Subaru diesel also suffers from.

Many diesels are not sold in the USA, because making them pass our tougher smog tests is extremely difficult, on top of the fact that they can't count on it to sell well.

The crowd that buys the VW Diesel cars in the USA is similar to the crowd that buys Toyota Prius and Honda Insight hybrids. The South Park episode "Smug Alert" only mentions hybrid car drivers, but people who have compact VW diesels act the same way.

That's a troll if I ever saw one! There's lots of TDIs in our city including mine that drive perfectly normally.
I couldn't agree more about the hybrid drivers - with cell phones stuck to their heads instead of paying attention to driving...

Not everyone with a TDI VW is a snob. Where I live the number of snobs just seem to outnumber the ordinary drivers.

I agree with the previous two posters. My dad went from an F-150 to a Jetta TDI. He liked it primarily because he's a fan of diesel engines, not an "eco-nut" or a snob. Matter of fact, he doesn't believe in global warming at all.

Guys, I'm waiting for another UOA from the Subaru diesel (+2 UOA from other Subaru diesel cars) to let you discuss some oil related matters ;-)

BTW - I do not need diesel when my MPG=36 city, especially with DPF.. because my firend achieve ~30 MPG city and less when DPF starts its regeneration.

The same car, next UOA... wear drops very slowly, probably some issues with injectors or DPF regeneration, city driving mostly and maybe too much sulfur in fuel.

Very far from good results IMO... mileage in km not miles.
