Hello all,

Just purchased an *immaculate* 1982 Peugeot 505 S TurboDiesel (5-speed!), off the original owner, who was a stickler about preventative maintenance. This has Peugeot's "XD2S" 4Cyl Turbo Diesel motor.

Its had a life of Chevron Delo 400, which has seemed to do it well.

I was contemplating the use of Rotella T6 (or equivalent) 5w40 synthetic, mainly to aid in cold weather starting here in the NW - and, perhaps, to add additional protection and longevity. The car has 200k original miles and doesnt appear to smoke blue or show any other signs of high oil consumption, FWIW. It also doesn't appear to be a leaker.

Your opinions?

Thanks!

Oh, wow! Nice find! It almost looks like a BMW with those wheels.

How cold does it get in Portland?

That is a rare find.
Good for you!
T5 should work well in the cold months, while you could use the plain old 15W-40 during the warm ones.
While I've only had Mercedes diesels, and always kind of wanted a Peugeot, a diesel is pretty neat.

Rotella T6 when it's what you would consider cold, 15w-40 when you would consider it "not chilly" if you don't feel like spending the extra dough on the synthetic stuff.

That is a BEAUTY-the gas powered ones are even rare around here, IMHO if Portland stays as warm as I think it does, any quality 15W40 diesel oil would do the job, but a synthetic 5W40 would help in winter (if it ever gets below 30F or so), with Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck or Delvac 1 (big $$$) being the best, but Rotella T6 and T5 10W30 close behind.

Thanks for the compliment on the car - It really is in excellent shape! I was attracted to it immediately after I stumbled on hearing it was for sale...I *had* to have it!

It gets around 30-40 degrees here typically for the next few months, with the occasional 20-25 degree day sprinkled here and there, closer to december...

Fantastic Car---I had two of them. In Africa, the 505 is right up there with the harvest gods. They still make them there btw. Extremely stout vehicles and can take an inordinate amount of abuse.
