I drive hundreds of miles in rental cars each week, and I drive quite a variety since I use different rental companies based on location.

There are some things that remain fairly consistent which is why I was surprised to see PRNDIL on a chevy this last week as opposed to PRND2L or PRND321, etc. what does the I stand for? intermediate?

I think it's to widen the range of cars that the shifter can fit in. Usually CVT's have those selections. However, Cobalts, Malibus to name a few have those designations you list.

Basically it means in between.
I.E. in between Drive and low in this case.
In my Equinox it is 2, 3 and 4 or I guess, I have never need to use it.

Thank you for the information, never too old to learn something and also Thank You for your service to our great country Is1Mike and to all the veterans and current service men and women on BITOG!!!!

Ford started out in 2nd gear when that was selected for many years; may still.
Works good in snow and ice.
Perhaps other makes are going that way too.
