Lately I have noticed that the NOACK % for some synthetic oils is close to that of conventional oils. I don't have a ton of PDS sheets or information to provide for you, but I have seen this from the PDS sheets provided throughout this site and from the company websites. Is it even something to consider or worry about? Thanks

A lower noack number is more important in an engine that produces more heat, such as turbo engines. It doesn't seem to matter that much in "regular" engines.

not as important as how well the oil control rings seal

It figures the noack would be close since most synthetics are group III, highly refined mineral oil just slightly better than the good conventional group IIs. To get 5W30 a lighter grade oil is used. it seems to work all right.

I think this is because a lot of synthetics today are using GRP-III basestocks and less PAO which seems to give a better NOACK number when used with the right additive package.

Most synthetics are in the 6%-11% range, which is less than the max allowed- 15%. On the cars I have owned that used oil, noack was irrelevant. In some high performance engines, it can make a difference.

HARD TO FIND THE NOACK # WITH MOST OF THE GROUP 111 Which has the low of 6% most are around 13%? I believe Amsoil is 10% with the group three 7500 That is the best low figure I could find.

Mobil's noack crept up when they starting using Grp III in some grades. Your pao/ester oils generally have the lowest noack.

Here are some NOACKs from 30 weight oils from all the data I've gathered (lowest to highest)

Only full synthetics with available data have been considered.

01. Amsoil 100% Synthetic 10w30 5.70%
02. Red Line 5w30 6.00%
03. Red Line 10w30 6.00%
04. Amsoil XL 10w30 6.70%
05. Amsoil Heavy Duty Diesel 10w30 6.70%
06. Amsoil 100% Synthetic 5w30 6.90%
07. Valvoline MaxLife Synthetic 10w30 7.00%
08. Amsoil Heavy Duty Diesel 5w30 7.60%
09. Valvoline Synpower 10w30 8.00%
10. Amsoil 100% Synthetic 0w30 8.65%
11. Amsoil XL 5w30 8.90%
12. Red Line 0w30 9.00%
13. Valvoline MaxLife Synthetic 5w30 9.50%
14. Pennzoil Platinum 10w30 9.70%
15. Valvoline Synpower 5w30 10.50%
16. Quaker State Ultimate Durability 10w30 11.10%

20. Quaker State Ultimate Durability 5w30 12.30%
21. Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 12.50%

Best 5w30 is Redline
Best 10w30 is Amsoil
Best shelf 5w30 is Valvoline Maxlife followed by Valvoline Synpower
Best shelf 10w30 is also Valvoline Maxlife followed by Valvoline Synpower

I wish I knew how M1 or Castrol Syntec/EDGE looked

GF-5 volatility and wear requirements remained the same as GF-4. dexos1 has increased the requirements for these two specs.

Wow, that info is great, thanks!! And thanks for everyones input =)

For GF-5/SN, Noack stayed the same. All oils have to be below 15%. Most oils are in the 6%-11% range now.

Yes, 6% is low enough for me (and my engine), yet another reason I stick with the RL.

I'm a little worried that the PU 5W-30 I'm putting in my son's 3.5 V-6 G6 is at 11.9%, but then again, that engine is super easy on oil, and he most definitely does NOT beat on that car (he drives almost like a grandpa

).

Does anyone know what 300V's numbers are??

OK, Great to have the Noack numbers. Thanks. I have a DI 2.4 engine in my Equinox. I've seen a few discussions here that a high Noack number can lead to deposits in the intake manifold a DI engine. Since I have a DI engine should I be using a low Noack oil? I've been using PP 5w/30. Thinking of switching to Valvoline Maxlife synth. About the same price as PP but might save some expensine maintenance in a few years.

Yes use a low NOACK oil and also get yourself a catch can setup that breathes the PCV and Breather line into the can before going back into the engine.

You will have to empty the can periodically but you will spare lots of gunk on your valves from building up which can be very costly to fix.
