A long time friend called this morning and said he has a 2002?? VW TDI that his son is driving to college daily. About 80 miles a day. He is a long time M1 user but doesn't know which M1 oil to use in the VW. I got on the M1 web site and it seems to me the 0-40 would be the best way to go. Remember cold morning starts and hot summer days. What say you?

Yup, either TDT or M1 0w40.

There is no contest for cold starts though, M1 0w40 over M1 5w40.

M1 5w40 is thick, 100 Cst at 40*c, 14.9 at 100*C and a VI of 155. M1 0w40 is 78.3 cSt at 40*C, 14 cSt at 100*C and a VI of 186

I was amazed at the difference in cold starts between the two.

I'd say have him run each and see which he likes best.

Normal interval is 10K miles, oil and filter. That'll be easy peasy on the oil with 80 miles a day.

Ok. My friend just called and says his VW is a 06 and requires 505.01 oil. Apparently M1 does not have an oil that meets that spec. Is that correct?

OK, so the engine is the PD diesel and requires VW spec 505.01 oil. The VW dealers usually "prescribe" Castrol Professional OE 5W-30, which meets 505.01. There are folks on this board and on the TDI board who have successfully run M1 TDT 5W-40 even though it does not have the VW certification.

The B5.5 Passat didn't get the TDI motor until 2004.

That means VW505.01 or use a VW 507 oil.

However, Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck is also an excellent choice.

505.00 oils are inadequate for cam wear prevention (so, Mobil 1 0w40 is out), which is crucial to the operation of the Pumpe-Duse system

M1 5-40 TDT is not 505.1 rated is it?

No 505.01 rating for any of the M1 oils, however the Mobil 1 5-30 EP does get the VW 507 decal.

Not interchangeable per-se. 507.00 supersedes previous diesel specs, including 505.01.

It's not VW certified at all. However many folks at TDIclub.com with the PD engine have used it with good cam wear results

Doug,
Thanks for that info. I looked it up on the M1 site and it is approved for 505 and 507 so I passed that on to my friend.

Yup, Mobil recommends it for 505.01:

tig1, you'll find it at PepBoys around here.

I think this would be a good fit, but I just called AZ and O'Reilly and they can't seem to get. Pep Boys not in this area, so any idea where we can get it.
