what oil should go in to a Benz E320 cdi?
i looked at the car history and i think the previous owner put in Mobile 1 5w-30, but that doesn't sound right. Is that okay or is there another?

Then use Mobil 1 ESP Formula M 5W40, if you want advice. There's nothing else available in the US except
Valvoline SynPower MST 5W30/40 which comes only in 55 gal drums
Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W30
Castrol SLX Professional OE 5W30
Amsoil European Car Formula 5W40 (Amsoil doesn't run its' oils through the mfgs gamut of tests, 229.51 is quite comprehensive, it has to meet ACEA A3, B3, B4, C3 plus several more tests on MB engines:

Especially in southern Calif. I'd recommended the Mobil 1 5W40.

That's incorrect. The 5W-30 only comes in 55 gal drums. The 5W-40 comes in quart bottles,I'm holding one in my hand at this moment. It's approved for MB 229.51 according to the bottle.

I have the same car and MB Spec 229.5 or 229.51 are recommended.
I have found Mobil 1 ESP formula 5W30 at Pep Boys for 6.99 per Liter. The oil is actually formulated in Europe and is MB 229.51. Total Quartz INEO MC3 is also another MB 229.51 approved oil which can be purchased from several online sources. TDIparts.com is one that I have ordered from. I am running Elf Excellium Full Tech 0W30, AKA Total Quartz Energy 9000 0W30. The Elf and Total 0W30 are identical and are PAO base.
