The Motorcraft FL400S just got smaller?

I have about 20 of the Pure One equivalents I'm hoping Purolator doesn't follow the trend.

I emailed purolator the other day, but I think they are still off for thanksgiving. I'll let you know what they say when I get a response.

Don't think it would hurt to try an MC filter using nitrile though.

I do 3K oil changes with Valvoline or Valvoline MaxLife on all my vehicles.

we have not gotten any of the shorter FL400's yet. we have plenty of the shorter FL-820S's and whenever we get a box of the taller ones i buy them out and throw them in my personal stash.

Thanks!

just got a few cases of the shorter FL400S's. the way my shelving is setup they are next to the FL500S filters that the newer models are taking and they appear to be the same size.

Apparently they are researching this.

Here is the current email trail:

Subject: Motorcraft FL-400S Oil Filter Size Reduction.

Hello,

I was Just curious as to why you have reduced the size of the Motorcraft

FL-400S oil filter.
I contacted Ford Motor Co. and they said to contact Purolator.
Also will this change apply to regular Purolator products, and the Bosch

line, or just the Motorcraft line ?
The size change is significant enough that I don't want to buy this
filter anymore.
However if the Purolator Classic, or PureOne lines are still the same
size then I will use one of them. If not I'll have to start using a Wix
filter.
This is unfortunate as I prefer Purolator filters to Wix products.

Thank You in advance for your response,
Justin Cartier

I am going to ask Sharon Donehue our Motorcraft Accounts Manager for
Purolator to provide that information. She worked with Ford on this
change.

Sharon... Can you provide the explanation for Justin.

Just got this reply from Purolator:

Hilda/Justin,
I am checking with engineering to see what drove the change, but I do
know for certain that the new design/size had to meet all of the same
Ford performance specifications.

If I am able to find out more information, I will pass it along.

Regards,
Sharon

Here is the latest from purolator:

Justin,
Eventually the aftermarket lines will reduce the height on their FL400S
equivalent. This has not happened yet and I am not sure of the exact
timing, but I have been told that they intend to make the change.

We obviously do not want to lose you as a loyal customer. Please be
assured that we have done our due diligence to ensure that the shortened
version still meets all of the Ford O.E. specifications. This change
was reviewed and approved by Ford engineering.

If you have any additional questions, please let me know.

Best Regards,
Sharon

I just asked her this question, I will post her response when I receive it.

Kudos that they are giving personal attention to your questions, but the answer is somewhat generic/feel good and does not answer your question "Why the change".

The wording "almost implies" that this is a Purolator change, not Ford. I wonder if they are just revamping their entire line to consolidate sizes, trim costs, and increase profits?

If this is a Ford change, then expect WIX to shorten theirs also?

I just reasked the question why. Here is the last email I sent her:

Sharon,

Was additional media added to compensate for the reduced can size ? My main concern is the reduction in oil capacity within the filter can. This and the fact that the longer style filter is much easier to reach on my Windstar, due to it's placement deep in the subframe.
Why was this change implemented ? I can only speculate, but I would think maybe it was to save on metal costs, or to make the filter fit on a new application where the older style wouldn't fit, to consolidate filter models.

Thanks So Much for your Quick responses,
Justin

I guess this means that we should buy up all the old stock while we still can.

well this sucks, these were the only "larger" filters that fit my jeep and don't seem to have issues with the ADBV. The can didn't get any bigger in diameter did it?

Try the Purolator L25230, it's the same size as the old FL-400S and it's recommended for some Jeeps and used to be recommended for the Ford Escort ZX-2. It also has a thread-end bypass.
