I recently purchased a 1999 F150 with the 4.6L V8. I noticed on the filler cap, Ford recommends 5w20 weight oil. I previously owned a truck with the Ford 5.0L and I always used 10w30. I am surprised Ford recommends such a thin oil for a V8 engine.

I will be using Dino oil in this truck as I will not be driving it very much. I have some leftover Quacker State 10w30 I will be using at the first change along with a Wix filter.

I was curious what type of oil the other folks here use or recommend for this engine.

Thank you in advance.

I would use 5w20 those modular 4.6 engines like the 5w20 they are different than the 5.0
Use what belongs in there and you won't have any problems..

My 98 F-150 called for 5w-30. I've run M1 5w-30 since the first oil change. 156,000 miles and still going strong. Burns no oil and runs great.

If the fill cap says use 5W20, use 5W20.

I put Motocraft 5w-20 blend i my father's 2008 F-150 plus a motocraft filter. They are both inexpensive and available at Walmart plus they are made for your truck so why not use it?
