Does anyone have info on this oil?

It was used in the 2003 RS6. Why was a diesel oil used in a petrol engine?
Is it synthetic?
How different is it from US Castrol Syntec 5w-40 ?
My service advisor feels that it is a good oil and a better choice than Syntec for the RS4.
Is this oil still produced?

SLX professional replaces TXT......but is it the same oil?

No, word is that VW changed the 505.01 spec somewhere in the last few years, which is why a lot of 505.01 speced oils changed to 5w30. A lot of people in the TDI world like the old 5w40 505.01 spec better if they use 505.01. Not scientific, but there seems to be be an increase in cam shaft failures in the PD TDI engines ever since the 5w30 weights came out. The SLX LL3 (long life 3) is a different oil than the standard SLX. It meets the low ash diesel spec, 507.00. Supposedly it's supposed to be backwards compatible with 505.01, and UOA show pretty decent results in the PD engines (which are some of the hardest diesel engines on oil because of the cam shaft design). Castrol Syntech 5w40 only met 505.00 spec, so technically it's not up to par with the 505.01 spec oils. There have been a lot of guys who have switched the PD TDI's to M1 TDT 5w40, Delvac 1, M1 ESP 507.00, Rotella 5w40, and Schaffers to name a good portion of the list. Not sure how these would work in VW gasser engines, but they have been performing great in the diesels, mainly due to a stronger additive package in my opinion (have more of the old good stuff like ZDDP). Hope that helps a little. If you want to read a lot on the differences between the 505.00, 505.01, and 507.00, do a search on the TDIclub.com forum and you will find enough to keep you at the computer for days on end.

Why is it specified for the RS6?

Because at that time you have 3 choices of oil specs VAG allowed for the North American Market:
VW502.00
VW505.00
VW505.01 (thanks to the PD motors)

iirc, the RS6 required 503.01 oil. Logistically, it was more cost effective to use an existing oil already in the market (even though 505.01 was relatively new to the market) than import & distribute to the dealer networks a special oil for a car sold in extremely limited quantities. The properties of 505.01 made it almost suitable for the engine, so they shortened the OCI.

Interestingly enough, VAG used the same tactic for the Touareg V10 TDI. It required, iirc, 506.01 oil, which is also not available, so VW stuck to an existing oil 505.01.

Was Castrol Syntec 5W-40 on the market at that time ?
Does this mean that TXT was seen to be a "better" oil for a high performance petrol engine ?
Does that still stand today and apply to other petrol engines?
Or was the 505.01 spec required for turbo bearing lubrication?

Regular syntec 5w40 is VW502.00/505.00
the TXT is a specific 505.01 oil.

505.01 was required for PD engines, since the individual "Pump Injectors" were timed off of the camshaft, which required oil to minimize the wear.

at that time, for what was available in the US market, 505.01 was the best standard available at that time.

the bad news.....

The bad news is......? ( This oil is still used, even with 503.01 oils available, in the RS6. Interestingly Mobil 1 0w-40 no longer lists 503.01 approval on their current botttles)

...it doesn't really do a great job in minimizing the camshaft wear on PD engines, let alone working adequately on a FSI engine.

Yep... I've got my fingers crossed and Mobil 1 TDT in my 05.5 PD TDI... 506.01 is available in the US, but not through the dealers, you have to go to private online vendors to get it. Some suspicion on how good it is for reducing wear or if it is made mainly with fuel economy in mind. Also, you will probably find most 505.01 oils are backwards compatible with a VW gasser oil (like 502.00), at least most of them I have seen are...
