Since pep boys carries it, and it is VW 504/507, Im looking at trying it in the wife's 2008 VW rabbit.

Since VW 504 supercedes VW 502, and given that 504/507 seem to be tested to a bit more stringent standards, I do not think that I have much to fear. It seems that there are some concerns with US gasoline quality and the latest specs, but I am not running to the full extent of the "longlife" design, as if there was a flexible service system. I will run merely a 5000 mile OCI.

My thought is that a 5w-30 may be a better oil for a short-trip car than the Amsoil Euro and Schaeffer's 9000 5w-40 Ive run so far. Given that the 5w-30 ESP is an ACEA A3, and has decent HT/HS, hard transients should still be covered, and we do not drive the car like we are racing, so Im not that terribly concerned.

Before I go and buy the oil, anyone have a reason to talk me out of it and just refill with Schaeffer's 9000 5w-40?

THanks!

I guess one thing Im looking for is where it specifically states that VW 504 supercedes VW 502.

It's kind of implied since M1 ESP 5w30 is "approved" for VAG 504.00 and is "recommended" for VAG 502.00.

I've seen a chart with 502.00/505.00 through 504.00/507.00 and their overall intended uses and intervals.

The VW 504.00 spec supersedes all other VW specifications for gasoline engines.

The VW 507.00 spec supersedes all previous VW specs for diesel engines EXCEPT for a limited number of special instances. These special instances do not include any engines sold in North America, I do not think.

While I have not tried the Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5w30, or the ESP Formula M 5w40, or even the Mobil Delvac 1 ESP 5W-40, I am pretty enthusiastic about all of them. I'm sticking with M1 Turbo Diesel Truck in my older-generation Golf TDI, but with a newer TDI I would be looking at each of these M1 products.

The wife's 2005 TDI (sig) is currently running M1 ESP 5W30 since 507 covers 505.01. Bought at Pep Boys.

From Motul pertaining to 504/507 capabilities.

TYPE OF USE

Specifically designed for VAG Group recent cars (Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda, Seat) fitted with EURO IV
engines that require lubricants with low Sulphur, low Phosphorus and low Sulphated Ashes rates.
Back compatibility of Motul Specific 504 00-507 00 5W-30 over previous VW oil standards 502 00, 505
00, 505 01, 503 00, 503 01, 506 00 or 506 01.
Attention :
- Touareg R5 and V10 Tdi must use Motul Specific 506 01-506 00-503 00.
- Drain intervals remain fixed at 15 000 km in Europe for any car calling for VW 502 00, 505 00 or
505 01 oils even if vehicles use Motul Specific 504 00-507 00.
- In case of doubt, refer to owner manual oil specification.

So if someone is lucky enough to have a TDI T-Reg I wonder what you use??? 505.01 or 507 or 506.01??

VW 502.00 is an old specification, and M1 0w40 is an okay oil but there are many better oils including several in the Mobil 1 family.
