Speaking of VANOS, the Bimmerworld guys have done lots of motor oil testing with their SCCA World Challenge cars—they report that moving around in oil weight has not had an effect on the system’s variable valve train control. They see no timing change due to different viscosities.

Why would timing change? I thought the issue was how quickly the VANOS could respond, not how accurately it would set the timing.

You are correct. Motor oil doesn't compute timing settings. It is simply a conduit by which the change occurs. I would think the only change brought by the slight change in viscosity would be response time, and even this would be insignificant unless drastically out of spec.
