Hey guys my mother came to visit my family and I noticed she needs an oil change. The manual does not say how many qts. Its a Saturn 2.2L 4 cylinder 2003

5 wow thanks I was figuring 4 qts I will grab the 5qt jug. What filter do you run? I think its a paper element filter??

Yeah 4 for the engine and 1 to go through the engine in consumption...

I'm surprised though that it takes 5 quarts for a little 4 banger engine...

My 2004 saab takes 6. My 81 MB takes 7.4 or so...

Even my 91 BMW takes 5.25.

Not uncommon, I guess?

Ya, it doesn't pay to guess. My 4 Banger Toyota P/U holds 6.1.

I have a 2007 ION and if I dump in 5 quarts the oil level will end up significantly above full on the dipstick. Now I usually end up starting at about 4.5 even though the manual states 5 quart capacity.

You might want to do the 4.5 and check it/run it a bit before dumping 5 quarts in straightaway.

Not a big fan of the lead weight on a cable ION dipstick by the way.

That's interesting. My 02 Cavalier Ecotec the manual says 5.8, but 5 leaves the oil above the full mark.

I don't know if it applies in this case, but there are two specs usually given, one for initial amount oil added at factory, and one for amount to add for an oil change.

+1

I found the same thing with my 2004 Ion.

The 2.2Ls aren't generally consumers of oil. That's the 1.9 SOHC/DOHC in the previous SL1/2 models...
