There is a guy in Ft. Collins, CO selling 67 quarts of unopened Castrol SLX Professional 5W30 on craigslist (@ $5/qt).

It lists 505.01, 502, 505.00 CF, Acea A3, B4, C3, and MB 229.51 on the label. I am not familiar with this product. I am using GC in gasoline engines that take a 30wt. with satisfaction so I am not interested in shipping it to Michigan (nor do own a VW or Mercedes)

Questions:

1) Where is this product bought? At what cost?

2) Is it a thick 30wt like GC? (12cst@100C)

3) Is it a better/worse/predecessor or updated product compared to GC?

Inquiring minds want to know.

1. VW/Audi dealer, probably around $6 a quart
2. Yes
3. It's probably a group 3 oil since it doesn't list VW 503.01, 504, or 507. You can also get the long life 5w-30 at the dealer that would be closest to GC for a little more. $5 is not a bad price, depending on shipping...

Don't know how to attach it, but from the data sheet for "SLX PROFESSIONAL LLIII POWERFLOW" 5W-30
KV @ 100*C (cSt)11.9
KV @ 40*C (cSt)73.4
cP @ -30*C 6130
High Temp High Shear Viscosity 3.5
Pour Point (*C)-42

"Castrol SLX Professional LLIII Powerflow has been developed with “Clean Performance Technology” in co-operation with the VW Group which sets new standards in the industry. Castrol SLX Professional LLIII Powerflow has been specifically co engineered with VW to ensure cleanliness of the engine, thereby reducing harmful emissions which damage the environment.
Through “Clean Performance Technology” Castrol SLX Professional LLIII Powerflow reduces long term blocking of particulate filters thereby prolonging the life of the diesel particulate filter."

• European ACEA:
Petrol: A3
Diesel: B3, B4
• Motor Manufacturers -
Mercedes Benz: MB 229.51
VW/Audi: 504 00, 507 00
BMW: Longlife 04

Since this oil meets the MB 229.51 it is a PAO low SAPS oil. Anything that meets MB 229.5x is PAO any oil that meets MB 229.3x is a Group III oil. Only 229.5x are long drain oils. For example German Castrol 0w-30 is a 229.5 spec oil (High SAP, PAO), Castrol 5w-40 is a 229.3 spec oil (high SAP, Group III)

Not always. Some of them contain a good share of Gr.III. Though the most important they are still MB 229.5x.

12cSt@+100c & 3.5cP HT/HS @+150c is an exotic PAO base, imo.

That data does not indicate PAO instead of Group 3. It doesn't even rule out 100% Group 2. Look at the HTHS and KV @100C of a 10W-30 mineral HDEO.

I agree. Those are the specs for Delo straight 30w, which is probably group 1 or 2.

Elf Solaris LSX is Group III. It boasts the following spec's …

MB : 229.31/229.51
BMW LONGLIFE 04
VW 502.00/505.00/505.01

And it is a long drain spec'd oil (20,000 - 40,000km).

Does it really matter if it's PAO or Group III?

It's MB 229.51. Daimler has already done the extensive tests on making sure it's an excellent oil.
