thinking about switching from M1 5w-30 to Rotella 5w-40 in my sr20det. asked around on my Nissan forums and no one really knows much about it. just wondering if anyone thinks it would be a good or a bad idea to try it out? M1 has worked well for me so far but its pretty thin and my engine is getting up to 100K miles here pretty soon. i assume my tolerances have loosed slightly so im thinking rotella might be a decent choice. doesn't burn much oil if any but it does come out very very nasty looking. haven't done a UOA yet either but i will soon.

rotella 5-40 would be a fine choice of oil in that. it wont hurt anything with almost 100k on it, its plenty broken in. run with no worries

Is yours tweaked. The SR series is great. The QR series is a big steaming pile of dog poop. If Rotella T 5w40 car work well in a Sooty Diesel Torque monster, I think it will serve you well in your small turbo app.

I'd run Castrol Syntec 0W-30 (GC) first before jumping all the way to the 40-weigh RTS. As you probably know, GC is a very thick 30-weight oil...quite a bit thicker than M1 5W-30.

thanks for the input everyone. ive got some rotella and a purolator filter in my shop right now. couldn't find and GC at the stores around here... also have a UOA kit here to see how the M1 has been doing.

The SR20DE works well on a 30 wt oil (I have done a dozen UOAs on my '01SE). No reason it wouldn't do just as well on the turbo version. Synthetic obviously would be desirable.

Depends. Stock SR20 or are you turning up the boost? Any modded SR20 should be on a 40W IMHO.

changed the oil yesterday. runs quiet starts well and haven't noticed any negative effects. Also flushed my tranny and started running Redline MT-90 seems to be good stuff. shifts very smooth.
