Approximately 3 qts. Added at 4k which explains the high additive numbers. The question becomes why did this machine burn through 3 qts. In 4k???? No leaks.

For such a short oil change it appears the iron reading is a little high. Is it possible this engine has a ring problem and the oil is getting out that way?

Further info.
This truck is owned and serviced by a diesel engine rebuilder. Bought with 21k on an engine with the original oem oil and sludged up. Crankshaft siezed and replaced, sludge cleaned, no honing, or replacement of rings or heads etc. Currently appears to be a spotless engine. First few runs with 15-40 otc oil burned thru oil at 3k or so. Switched to 9000 at about 30k. Currently oil fill is fine till 4 or 5k then drops 3 qts.

Maybe he should have replaced the rings while he had it torn down.

1) The original owner should be shot for running the FF for 21k.

2) Your friend is an engine rebuilder, and he rebuilt this engine that was seized up from lack of lubrication without honing the cylinders and replacing the rings/pistons?

2)One of those things. He did not plan on keeping the vehicle... Time and money to do the rings when they appeared to be fine.

Not sure who's the bigger idiot here-the guy who never changed the FF oil for 21K, or the guy who rebuilt the engine & couldn't do a quick hone & ring set. Kinda sounds like a moron convention! The cat is probably burning off the oil & will eventually get stopped up if the problem is not resolved.
