I'm looking for a decent HDD for a NAS unit. I'd like something that's going to be pretty long-lived and sized in the sub-terabyte range. Speed is not particularly an issue, and temperature is only being considered because of it's effects on longevity. The 3.5" form factor is preferable because of the enclosure the drive will be going in.

So, storage gurus of the BITOG community, what say you? Can you recommend me a company, a product line or even a specific unit?

Just for home consumer use, anything will work but I recommend Samsung and the Western Digital's low power series. Samsung tends to be quiet (but low performance) and WD has lower power consumption. The reason for these recommendation is their use of Marvell ASIC that is very good at power consumption.

Not sure about Seagate, but IBM usually consumes more power.
