Some of the numbers seems strange when compared to previous samples. Its the first run and it now has a by-pass. Maybe the by-pass filter has contributed to this. The oil was super clean with a PQ index of 1, it was 7 at 1316 miles. The next two OCI's should tell the whole story. Si was 10 and Na was 5 in VOA of this oil

I would not say that the approval process is bull. It is the standard for what you should use but it does not mean that there is no better. I have been using non VW approved oil in my 03 TDI for the past 170K miles and the result is excellent even for a 20K OCI. I am currently running a mix of RP 10W30 CI-4+ and Redline 30WT race oil.

What year is the car?

The fifth and sixth column almost look like there was a 5W30 in there...I know the latest oil VW has been using at the dealers has been a 5W30, as they are now using that over the previous 505.01 5W40...didn't seem to make a big difference in anything, if that is what it was.

The schaeffer's UOA is great. 9ppm Fe vs. 24?

THe newer 9000 5w-40 say that it is suitable for VW 502 and one other VW spec (I forger which). My older bottles, mabe 1.5 or 2 ears old do not say this.

Schaeffer does support the use of S9000 for 505.01 and it is clearly on the label. It is not VAG tested.

Previous OCI were VW LL III 5W30 507.00 oil

I wonder if the nickel could be in the construction of by-pass filter. We may see a clash between LL III 5W30 and S9000. I think if it is clash that has caused some unexpected metals to show up, Ni and Cr then after its changed again it will settle down. It clearly reduced FE, Cu and Al. No doubt here this oil performed very well and less than 6 USD per quart. I also believe that the Amsoil BP90 filter gave the oil it ability to achieve maximum efficiency.

VAG oils perform very well when you consider they are so low in additives. VW is motivated to preserve emission systems and achieve high mileage in the very competitive car market.

Thanks, I have only been following the VW TDI's intermittently, but have been more interested in the PD engines and oils that run well/produce good results in them...I'm still new to them. Even though we own a 2006... (not driven by me daily though)
