Coolant is only about 5k miles since last changed (head rebuild) and at that time, I was told I should change the hose soon. Now that it is finally replaced, I decided to reuse the coolant since it is "like new". Drain it in a pan, and filter it out with a coffee filter before putting back into the tank. Will change it out at the normal 30k interval (25k later since it already has 5k on it).

Is this acceptable? Coolant is $7.5 a gallon, don't want to waste it.

I reuse mine quite a bit. I strain it through some fine cheese cloth.

Best way to see if the coolant needs changed out is with a voltmeter. With one probe in the coolant and the other on the positive battery post, the higher the reading the more dissolved mineral in the coolant.

Sorry for the bump.

I have saved an old Brita Pitcher and filter, and use it for filtering coolant. Works superbly.

I've done it many times, just pouring it through a makeshift filter back into the radiator.
