Would anybody happen to know how to decipher any manufacturers part numbering system?

For example; what is the difference between a Fram PH3569, PH8A, and a PH16? (Yes I said the four letter 'f' word, this is just an example!)

Fram numbers used to be easy.

Those filters will all interchange if you have the room for the different sized cans.

The ph3569 replaced the Ph2850 which was replaced by the Ph8a.

The ph16 is the short version of the Ph8a.

My Scout used the 2850 then one day I couldn't get em and the new # was the Ph8a.

I believe that the 3569 has a heavier duty can and a slightly different bypass pressure.

I haven't a clue why Fram used the system it did. Wix seems more sensible, even with no rhyme or reason within the part numbers themselves. There is probably some pattern, but I just cannot see it (firmware issues).

Thanks, Gary. Could you please explain Wix's numbering system or give me a link to a webpage that does?

Wix uses a 5 digit system.

51515 is a PH8 equivalent

The first "5" means lube filter

A "4" would mean an air filter

A "3" is a fuel filter.

Now I can't make the numbers within a given group make sense in relation to what they share.

51515 is a PH8 size
51516 is a FL400S size. The common thing they share is thread ..but a 51068 is a PH16 ...so I have to figure that you can't decipher the product from the number like you can with fittings or something

What are the differences in the PH3569, PH8A, and the PH16? ADBV yes or no and bypass pressure is probably the most important characteristics along with media sq in.

I guess what I need to be asking is what's the best sized and style filter for my application (I'll never use Fram)? It is for an 81 VW Rabbit Pickup. 1.6L NA diesel engine.

Thanks

Matt

I'd go with the regular old FL1A/PH8A/51515 filter ..but that's just me.

Thank you! Where do you get that info? Do you like the FL1A/PH8A/51515 mainly because of the lower bypass pressure?

It's a one way view. I would use a lower bypass rated filter where a higher one was spec'd ..but I wouldn't go the other way around.

Any filter with a 30psi bypass is most likely reinforced with a mesh.

I've tried to figure out some of the numbering with the Donaldson filters, and so far what I've concluded is there is very little rhyme or reason. Frequently the last four digits coincide with the original manufacturers last digits, sometimes not. Sometimes some digits are also competitor digits. Their P550008 strangely enough is their version of the pH8A.
Sometimes I find a cross a new model and find that the numbers are consecutive, like someone had to add the list of 2007 Nissans, for example, and ran in sequence.

i know ford, but i have an unfair advantage.

the FL-820S aka the F1AZ-6731-BD breaks down like this

FL is the motorcraft designation for an oil filter, FA is air filter, FG is fuel filter. the 820 is the next number in line, nothing special. the S signifies that it has a silicone anti drain back valve. the S disignation is only used for filters which have upgraded to silicone.

the F1AZ-6731-BD, which is the ford, not motocraft, number breaks down like that. F1 means the first use was 1991. F being the 90s, and 1 being 1991. the A means it was intended for a full size application. the Z implies that it is a service part for a Ford vehicle, whereas a Y would imply a Lincoln or Mercury application, which does not follow as it should because the first use for the filter was on a 1991 Lincoln Town Car. 6731 is the basic number for an oil filter. and BD is the suffix, usually used to determine how many upgrades have been made, although the FL-830 was a F1AZ-6731-A

I have WIX oil filters here that start with a 2. So the first digit theory is not correct Gary, check out G2092.

24938, 24944 fit Honda ATV's and a cartridge yet my CTS uses a cartridge and its 57090. So there is more to figure out with the WIX numbering system than the first digit.

Have a Wix price list here in front of me

2xxxx, 3xxxx, 4xxxx are air filter ranges
2xxxx, 5xxxx, oil filters
5,xxxx, trans filter
2,xxxx, 3,xxxx, fuel
etc

Mike ..if you're saying that some numbers may be 2 3 5 or whatever and may not be what I've seen them to be ..fine ...really

This isn't some "I'M GOD on all that I say" here

Having a rough day?

Every automotive oil filter number that I've EVER researched starts with a 5. Spin-on fuel filters always started with a 3 ....etc..etc..

But ..be happy ..be well

Thanks for the clarification ..and whatever!
