to being substitutes for real racing oils unless you add some STP to them. The manufacturers are already reducing the zinc and phosphorous to meet newer emission guidelines. Everyone is still pushing them left and right for flat-tappet cams. That day will soon be coming to an end.

Well here is the thing commercial diesels have far greater loads on their valve train then any thing anyone with a gas car has to deal with. So even if they drop the ZDDP they will have to add something else to the oil to act as an anti-wear agent. The problem is that it might not show up in a standard UOA test of the VOA. take antimony additives how often does a lab even list them ont he form? What about tungsten it was being experimented with as an a AW additive. Then you have companies like NEO that include lead in their oil as an AW additive so that has to be accounted for. In the end these cam companies need to offer a better product that starts with better raw materials built and finished to higher standards!

I concur. And in order to be certified for many of the manufacturers, the variety of tests these oils are subject to are likely far more punishing than those many of the "race" oils see, which are not necessarily held to the same standards.

Also you have to think about the non metallic AW substitutes which will never show up in a conventinal UOA. Remember oils such as Fuchs GT-1 doesn't even contain any ZDDP at all.......
