Haven't done one in a while but due to the increasing costs of the XD-3 here in Canada, and the truck being out of warranty :) I decided to give Amsoil a try. It did very well I think, it definitely did not shear as much as the other oils I tried. Usage type is still similar, plenty of heavy hauling with a lot of stop and go, with more hwy driving for this interval. Not sure if that's why the fuel level is so much less or maybe the latest flash from Ford has finally cured that.

I also switched to the Amsoil EaO synthetic cartridge filter from the OEM.

My only concern is the higher oxidation, nitration and sulfation numbers, any idea why they're higher?

Currently running the ACD 10w30 for the summer but since it's viscosity starts at 10.5, do you think it will "last" the 5000 miles?

Because this lab may not know how to deal with the esters in this oil. I think you can just ignore the numbers like Patman does, or call the lab and see what they say.

You wear metals are exceptional. So far my UOA's on DEO have been GREAT.

This would have been a good oil for summer as well. ACD will do OK, but really I'm thinking these PSD's like 40's or rather they shear the heck out of 40's - maybe synthetic monograde with no VII's will hold it's own.

Great looking UOA. The TBN is a little low, but then again the TBN only starts at 8 with the DEO formulation.

I'd be curious to see what the TBN retention looks like if the oil is run out a little longer.

Deo did well and held viscosity. I am not too fond of this oil, because of the higher price, lower AW addatives, and lower tbn. My opinion may bust though, just like the cj-4 myths. I will be looking forward to your ACD UOA, if you do one. What was all the silicon from early on, talk about progression. Break-in?

I think so. Higher price vs which other oil? I pay about $5.60/quart which is very good in Canada, most of the other synthetic HDEO 5w40's are $7-9/L

That was my thought too regarding the higher ox/ni/s numbers.

I might take out the ACD earlier, maybe 3,000 miles and keep the oil filter for another 5000-6000 mile run.

I'll probably go back to the 5w40 all year round, I must say though that this engine loves the 30 weight oil. Better starts, better fuel economy, no "romps" If it didn't shear the oil so much, I'd use the HDD 5w30 with 8-10K intervals.

Great report. I'm not up on the diesel oils. Is the equivalent Mobil product Delvac 1 ESP?

I see that now but I could not go very far past 5000 miles at first, given my previous results with 40 weights. Next time I'll probably go to 6500 and see how much it shears.

I wouldn't worry about the shearing as it doesn't seem to be impacting wear control.

True, I just wonder how far can the oil shear before it gets too thin to protect properly. As you see, it was as low as 8.9 and the wear numbers were normal.

I was talking about AME vs. DEO

Very good - DEO is a very good oil and reasonable in price. I am considering it or S9000 for use in a VW TDI PD when I get closer to 60k. Schaeffer's supports the use of S9000 in a VW TDI PD motor were as Amsoil does not support the use of DEO. Amsoil AFL is ok but not giving the numbers many would like to see in their PD motors. DEO is a clean oil, no moly, no Boron, like VW 507 oils. Yet the performance is great so far, even in a PD.

I could use a few more DEO users in my TDI UOA thread at Freds. I also need a few S9000 users. Yes DEO is a great PD oil but Amsoil will not support the use. Schaeffer however supports the use of S9000. So far it appears that CJ4 oils will dominate in the end. VAG 507 oils will do well also but many who use these oils have issues.

DEO is a outstanding oil - work your way up slowly. If you get great performance for 7k to 8k that is good.

Mobil 1 Delvac and Mobil 1 Delvac ESP are CI4+ and CJ4 - and yes this is Amsoil's comparable oil. My theory is the base oil of DEO must be very good. When you compare performance they are very similar. Yet the Amsoil does it with allot less additives. I also believe that all the new CJ4 oils will give similar performance. In other words they are all good.
