thanks, i cleaned the black stuff off the bracket on the discharge tube, so it looks more normal. i guess it gets a little hot under there and the under hood insulation melts to it. i had just bought the car the day before when i took the pic.

Yes it is a broomstick. The hydraulic hood lift support thing doesn't work anymore. I like how some cars that don't use the hydraulic hood lift use some metal rod instead.
 
The broomstick is also useful should you get attacked by a serpent -- seems to be a more common problem than I thought!

Just needs new struts. I know the struts on my hatch don't hold as well as they used to, but I can't find it financially smart to spend $80-100 on new struts just to hold up my hatch better. -shrugs- They still hold, they just require a lot of effort to get the hatch up in the first place.
 
Careful, that always means they are close to failure. Also, they will always give out while you are under it.
