Hey guys,

It's been a while since I've been into the 'oil scene', so to speak, here at BITOG.

I have a 2007 GTI with a direct injected, turbo-charged 2 liter engine, and I drive it ...spiritedly

For warranty reasons, I need to use a VW 502 00 approved oil. I know that there is the semi-synth (group III?) Castrol oils, but I prefer to run one of the group IV true synths.

What oil are people running these days for a true synthetic oil that is VW 502 00 approved and not Amsoil/redline/etc?

Thanks!

whats the deal with the shell helix formula we hear is the same as the quaker state 5w-40?
what group is this stuff. ?
it was said the helix is the ferrari fill.
the helix is 502.00 if i am not mistaken

Q® Full Synthetic Oils
Q® European
Engine Motor Oils
Heat-Activated Formula
Fine-tuned for European engines
Auto manufacturers such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz,
Volkswagen and Porsche have internal specifications
and internal tests that go beyond the minimum
standards of ACEA and API. These requirements
stress engines to extremes and put additional
demands on the motor oil.
Q® European Engine formulas stand up to these tough
conditions and help European engines perform
their best.
Q® European Engine formulas
Heat-activated formula is fine-tuned for
European engines. Compared to
conventional oils, Q® European
formula helps provide:
• Reduced oil consumption

Q® TorquePowerTM 4x4 and Truck Full Synthetic motor oil
is engineered to help maximize power and torque in the
engines of hard-working trucks and SUVs. You define
power in terms of torque because you need torque for
towing, hauling and off-roading. But poor power transfer
can rob your engine of torque. Q’s heat-activated
formula helps maximize power transfer from the engine
to the driveshaft to help you get the torque you need to
haul loads, tackle trails, and just get it done.

• Superb protection against engine stress under
heavy loads
• Great protection against oil oxidation and deposits
• Excellent low-temperature lubrication

amorak,

This may be old news to you but those Direct Injection engines are really putting some fuel in the oil (last several reports I've seen, any way.) Whatever oil you choose I'd keep and eye on it (UOA) and keep the drain interval length down until you feel it out. The RLI oils have been highly touted in these apps lately, but honestly I have no clue if they are approved or not. Good luck with your hunt,

REDDOG

RLI and Amsoil appear to be very good oils.....perhaps better than most, if not all, VW502 oils. But they do not have formal VW502 approval. So if you are dealing with a super-anal dealer, then you are taking a risk. If your dealer is laid-back, then I'd use one of these.

The need for a Groupe Base Sticky Thread that can explain and dispell base oil myths is more apparent all the time.
