I have 8 quarts of the old and 5 gallons of the new. The new smells a lot like gear oil.

Not at all.
I was just over at the local Shell distributor here in NW Ohio and they had CI-4+ 10W-30 but in 5g pails. I have not been able to find anything but CJ-4 in store. I'm not worried about using CI-4, since all my equipment runs ULSD and gets annual changes at relatively low hours or miles.
