This does not look good. My soot is off the charts again, my iron is following it. Here is what I am doing:
1. I ran the oil I put in (AFL) for about 2500 miles.
2. I did another oil and filter change at 2500 miles with the leftover oil I had, combination of AFL and Elf 505.01
3. I will change my oil on Monday, to Elf Solaris 507, the oil I just put in will have about 500 miles on it. I am doing this to try and flush anything out of the motor.
4. I clearly have an EGR problem which I am looking into. Worst comes to worst I will block the EGR port and live with the constant CEL.

Sorry it is so small.
Oh yeah... I will be pulling a sample of the 507 after 25 miles to do a baseline UOA, then I will pull another sample at 5025 miles without changing the oil to see how it looks.

How is the oil suitable for continued use with Fe at 163 ppm?

I would look into using a more robust oil.

why not fix the EGR properly? I know, EGR is not necessarily the best for soot loading in the oil, and a few other things, but a properly working EGR will still allow an engine to last for hundreds of thousands of miles - 617 MB diesels have ben doing it for a long time.

So why not fix the EGR? and have the engine working properly, as designed.

That is pretty terrible....and I'm sure the oil isn't helping, but you should cut your OCI and do an engine clean.

Look at your Chromium...this is ring wear...probably from soot. Something is not right....I think you need to look deeper into this:

Sorry (in advance) to suggest the following:

Delvac 1, the original formula, should help you get your iron under control. As long as your camshaft and followers are not damaged.

I plan on trying to fix it properly, but if I have problems with this I will not hesitate to just block the EGR off.

I already did do a flush. The oil I ran after this change (from 70k on) was in there for 2500 miles. The oil that is in my car now will not be in there more than 500 miles.

I am going to run an injector diesel purge and then change the oil to Elf Solaris 507.

I will NOT run an oil that at least meets the 505.01 standard.

This next week I also plan on removing the EGR, and complete intake and going through the entire system, cleaning what I can and testing the valves, etc.

I think #19 is going to be my problem.

With the Elf 507 I am going to get a UOA done at 25 miles, and then again at 5025 miles. IF soot is over 1% I will change it.

My understanding is that diesel soot from the EGR fills the intake manifold with junk, causing restricted and unequal flow. This might lead to bad results.

BG products makes a diesel intake cleaner that doesn't cause hydrolock in diesel engines.

Not really comparable, PD's are much harder on oil, especially with malfunctioning EGR's.

True, but it's always been a very good 5w-40 in multiple engines. Not comparable here, but worthy of consideration.

Notice OAI said the oil is suitable for continued use, while Fe is at 163 ppm. Strange. Usually the cut off is 150 ppm per sample run.

Yeah I sent a nastygram to them on this one.

Do you know the name of it?

I used BG 44k in gassers, and love it.

If so, take a look at your injector balance.
Also take a look at the G30 thrust sensor. Do a sanity check on it to be sure it is not reading high.
Are you using any kind of fuel additive to control soot?

I do have Vag-Com and plan on doing some logs. I don't know what the G30 sensor is. What channel can I fin it on?

I use stanadyne (performance) and I use Bio(b20) from time to time.

I would like to know their reply.

I am starting to question OAI... I think I might start paying the extra money and go back to Blackstone. OAI, takes forever to get my samples back.

Blackstone is just as bad, but at least they would have mentioned the Fe. I think.
