i just bought a set of falkens, my 3rd set of this brand. while doing a bit of research i found out that they are made by sumitomo and that sumitomo is in collaboration with goodyear. just wondering if anyone knows what other tire makers make other off brands....

I know Michelin owns BFG and Uniroyal and Goodyear owns Kelly-Springfield. The strange this is I would buy Kelly tire long before Goodyear.
I suggested a permanent post along the lines of "who makes what" some time back, and Capri Racer pointed out the inaccuracy that would soon take over because so many tire companes build a set number of tires under contract, then the contract changes builders because of re-biding.

One way to determine who builds what is by the DOT code, and through the DOT code, figuring out who *owns the plant* where the tires were made.
Here's an example, and a link to accomplish this.
On every tire built, there's a DOT code. It is stamped on the sidewall up near the bead. Ususally on the inside of the tire. It looks like this: DOT 0B XO C60 1004
You're looking at the first two digits after the "DOT" in that DOT code. In this case, it is "0B" Then, go to this site, to look those two digits up.

So, in our example, despite what "brand" the tire says it is on the sidewall, the tire was built at the Bridgestone/Firestone plant in Wilson, NC.

For the longest time, Dunlop Tire was partially owned by Sumitomo, and I think Goodyear. I thought Goodyear completely bought them out a few years back. Still - some of the operations were likely to be kept separate. Over those years, I had Dunlops that were made in the US, Japan, and France. I'm sure of them were made under contract by third parties.
in doing a bit of searching i found this list but its not really what i was looking for, im more intersted in what "mother" factory makes the smaller "baby" brands.
Found this list--thought it may save someone a few bucks buying a house brand instead. Saved me around 300 bucks today.

So, three manufacturers make tires under the "Sigma" name for TBC. Unfortunatly, that's not that informative.
Look up the plant code in the DOT code, and then you'll know whose plant the tire was made in.

I also hope that everyone realizes that this can change over time.
Private brands have 3 flavors:
1) Brands produced by the tire manufacturer as a low cost alternative. Typically these are marketed directly to wholesalers. These, of course, probably will not change manufacturers, but finding a distributor may be a problem later.
2) Brands that are tied to a distributor. TBC was mentioned above. They are a distruibtion company and own Tire Kingdom, Merchant's Tire, and a couple of other retailers. They have several house brands, Sigma being just one of them. They have tire manufacturers make tires with that name on them. Not only would this vary over time, but sometimes different manufacturers will make them at the same time. Usually not within the same line, but I have seen this be as specific as a tire size.
3) Small manufacturers. For example Apollo is an Indian manufacturer.
One thing you should be aware of: A private brand tire may be quite different from its name brand counterpart. It could also be virtually identical - or anything in between.
To me, knowing the manufacturer has only a little value.
