Hi all,

Does anyone know if there is much over all difference between 2 oils is product X had .10 % Zinc Mass and Y had .09 % Zonc Mass.

So if you were looking at two oil companys and most of company X had .10 but anothers had .09 would it be a case of saying yes go for X or are we spilting hairs? and you would not see any differences.

Besides Zinc, there is also Boron, Calcium and Moly. Also, some base stocks provide FM and AW support. Like Pablo said, too many factors in the equation.....including viscosity.

Francis,

I assume we're discussing strictly PCMO's.
We are talking about a 0.01% or 100 ppm differential here. Inconsequential!

Now, when you talk about 0.15% verses 0.05%, then yes, there would be a way to differentiate.

Zinc shows up as a result of the ZDDP AW/AO compound, is a "Methusalah" technology, and is slowly being replaced by other organic compounds as per Last_Z's comments.

To provide a real-world example of MolaKule's comments, Kendall GT-1 20w-50 from 7-10 years ago had 0.16% zinc, while today's same Kendall oil has 0.11%. That would exemplify a small, yet significant, real-world difference of about 50%.

It should be noted I learned of this from Mola himself. I know about organic compounds as much as I know about Valentines and being romantic and stuff like that!

Fuchs has a very hi-tec zincless formulation called Titan GT 0w-20 thats been available abroad going on 3 years now .

As time goes by we'll see more of this technology put to work in motor oils available here in North America .

TooSlick has stated in another thread that the very best oils are made in the USA , I could not disagree more .
