I wanted to listen to some music on Youtube last night and the videos won't play. Here's a screenshot of what I get:

It can be challenging to keep up with constant Youtube+HTML5 updates.

What OS are you running(if not sure, click on the Apple menu then hit "about this Mac") and is it up to date?

I use both Safari and Firefox, with Firefox as my main OS. I even have Chrome installed and fire it up occasionally, although I don't like Chrome as a general rule. Sometimes, websites are glitchy in one browser and fine in another, although there again you have to keep individual browsers up to date too(Software Update handles Safari, while Firefox handles its own updates).

I'm not totally sure about the iOS. I'm currently downloading the High Sierra update to see if this helps.

What computer is this?

If you are downloading an "update" to High Sierra(10.13), that's probably the OS you are currently running. I still consider it reasonably current, and it's the main OS I run. If nothing else, it should continue receiving updates for another year or so(expect it to roll of support in September 2020 if past Apple behavior is any indication).

I wouldn't be surprised if the update fixes your problem.

I think she bought this computer back in 2014 and it's still the original software version that came with it. It's had the "update to High Sierra" blurb on the update list as long as I can remember.

2014 I think would have been Yosemite(10.10).

Does it have any further updates?

If nothing else, you might try downloading and using Firefox or Chrome.

Which one is better out of those two? Do you have a good reliable link for the downloads?

What's weird is I can play the embedded videos here that people have uploaded (the ones in the "What are you listening to now") play just fine. When I go to Youtube and try to play a video,it now says "Safari can't open the specified address".

What version of safari are you running...?

Mojave is the current macOS I believe... Safari Version 12.1.1 I believe.

BTW my mac runs you tube fine on Safari and FireFox...

In the box that pops up:

Quote
"Do you want to allow this page to open "QuickTime Player"?

Cancel Allow

I'm not sure this what you want to do though... maybe

Could have something to do with your default programs settings.

I don't even get that message anymore. This is what pops up now:
