You must be 18 years old to buy WD-40 now

I've heard of that for spray paint, and for some other things which could be huffed.

But WD-40? I almost wonder if that's not a mistake, the cashier thinking "everything" in an aerosol can needs ID. Or that they mistook it for paint and not lubricant.

Although any given state's law could be written in such a way to be over-reaching.

probably mandated for anything aerosol.

It could very well be. Makes a law easier to write, and enforce, and understand for all. Just seems wrong. Might pave the path for anything with VOC's to require ID (last I knew, gasoline fell into that category--and I want to say, people have huffed gasoline).

my father told me a kid from his neighborhood huffed freon and killed himself

50 year old news at the very least.
I suppose the term "huffing" is what's recent.
Airplane glue sniffers led to shelf signs which read, "No model glue sold without purchase of a model", in the '60's.
Kids in So. Cal schools were said to use "spray". The kiddies included in the interview were fried. That was the '70's.

How 'bout the 'pass-out' stories from kids making themselves smoke cigarettes? I heard 'em firsthand.

Re the OP: I'm guessing the rule was dreamt up without full owner/manager involvement.
Isn't WD-40 flammable? Maybe, with the help of a match, the local kiddies were making personal flamethrowers?

More than likely not a law, but a store policy so they don't face civil liability.

They could even train their employees that "it's the law" as it's a simpler explanation than reality.

I was once carded to buy a cigarette lighter-- I wanted it to shrink heat shrink tubing. So if I had a carton of 200 smokes they'd have stopped me from consuming them with this policy?

Some years ago, the Ch. 2 news here in Chicago did a story about huffing, and they showed all the "usual" sprays, and yes that included WD-40.

The most memorable part of the story was the homeless women that had been huffing a can of silver spray paint.... Her face looked like that of the Tin Man!

A friend of my sons inhaled butane lighter fluid in the parking lot of the local Safeway where he just bought it and dropped dead. An office worker was looking out the window and saw the whole thing. Made it harder to purchase butane refills.

I knew a kid who did the same.

Jeebus - Look at all the replies. No wonder why they are asking.
