I'm hoping to tap into the knowledge base here to save myself a little time, mess, and oil.
I have been screwing around with picking oil filters for my FXT for a while (don't like the flimsy blue ones the dealers use/sell) and just put a Subaru branded Tokyo Roki 15208AA170 on my car last weekend. This is actually the recommended filter for the 2015+ WRX, which has 2.0l DIT engine that is similar to the one in my car (rated for slightly higher max HP because it puts out the max torque up to a somewhat higher RPM). This is a shorter and wider filter than the blue cans and the black Tokyo Roki that came on my car, and I have read that this is due to tighter hood clearance on the WRX or because there was some kind of heating issue that the shorter filter solved.
Anyway, I figured that the engines were similar enough that I could use this WRX filter, which appears to be very well constructed.
With me being me, I had to start thinking too hard about it and wonder...well, this filter is about 20mm shorter than the two I mentioned above that I know are OK for the FXT. Is there any chance that the hollow metal tube that the filter screws onto (there must be a proper name for it) is SHORTER in the WRX than in my FXT to accomodate the shorter filter? Have I possibly caused the oil flow in my engine to be restricted because there is not enough clearance between the top of the tube (which I assume is the inlet for the oil, not sure) and the filter casing? The car is running great now, but that doesn't mean I might not end up being oil starved if I gun it for a long time or there is some other strange condition in the future.
Since the filter is top mounted, it really isn't a big deal to unscrew it when the car is cool, clean up a little oil, and measure the tube to estimate how much clearance there is inside the filter. But, if somebody here knows the answer to my question, so much the better for me.
