Wrong Oil put into my 1999 Mercedes Benz CLK320

I want to share this site to the readers of this thread... Not only does it say on this website that Mobil 1 10w30 isnt recommended but it also says it in my Owner's Manual to use 229.5. Im still bothered that i overlooked it! http://www.whnet.com/4x4/oil.html If you read the second section of this website...under (Vehicles with the Flexible Service System FSS from MY1998-2004 can use 229.5 or 229.3 oils). One of the oils recommended is "Castrol Syntec 5W-40" This isnt the same GC strewned all over BITOG message boards is it? I thought GC is only 0w30?

I suggest you do the same. The original post talks about M1 10w-30, while your post talks about M1 0w-30. I know neither one has high enough HTHS, but was just wondering where the M1 0w-30 reference came from...

Use either Mobil 0W40 or Mobil 1 5W40 ESP and you will be just fine. That engine (M112) had a bit of a problem with stuck rings causing oil consumption. Change your oil every 10k or once a year at least. That way you won't have a problem at all.

wow. never knew there was a Mobil 1 5w40 ESP that "prolongs the life and maintains the efficiency of Car Emission Reduction Systems" Must be expensive to get since you can only buy it at a Mercedes Benz dealership? is this why my O2 Sensor failed on me?

just spoke to my mechanic who used to work at a Mercedes dealership and he tells me that this Mobil 1 5w40 ESP oil is now standard for all oil changes because of the stringent California emissions requirements. take it for what that's worth.

Do NOT use 5w40 ESP in gasoline engines. It was originally approved for all MB engines, but they found that it "reacted" with the ethanol-filled gas in the United States. All US dealers have been instructed to continue using 0w40 in gasoline cars and the 5w40 ESP only in diesels. Switched over to the 5w40 ESP in my folks' e320 cdi, and it has inexplicably increased mileage significantly over the previously used 0w40.

are u sure? where did u get this information?

Just did a quick research and there are 2 very different oils that are getting confused here.. This is Mobil 1 ESP Formula M 5W-40 - Emission System Protection. http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lubes/PDS/GLXXENPVLMOMobil1_ESP_Formula_M_5W-40.asp and...the other one is Mobil Delvac 1 ESP 5W-40 http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lubes/PDS/GLXXENCVLMOMobil_Delvac_1_ESP_5W-40.asp IS this correct?

I don't think the oil had anything to do with your O2 sensor failing. We still use M1 5W40 ESP M on all our cars except the AMG models (M1 0W40) and SLR (M1 15W50)

all this name dropping really bothers me. "ESP" this or specifically "formulated for Mercedes" is all marketing i think. I understand that Mobil 1 needs to come up with ingenious ways to market their products but for the average consumer who, for example, doesnt visit BITOG....it's all confusing.

This is similar to BMW's stance. They allow LL-04 oil in gasoline engines in Europe, but strongly advise against using such oils in their gasoline engines outside of Europe, citing "fuel quality" issues. Not sure it's necessarily ethanol though. They mix certain amount of "bio-fuels" into gasoline in many European countries as well.

Fredric, i appreciate very much the repost on this. i will definitely keep using Mobil 1 0w40. This is the one thing I dislike about Mercedes..it's a very sensitive car. Gotta use the right fuel..gotta use the right oil. Car is loaded with electronics and sensors that are so touchy that its almost borderline overbearing. Knock on wood so far cuz as of now all ive done are oil changes/fluids and a replaced O2 Sensor.
