How does the mechanic know how deep the case is on a camshaft? And how does he know the lobe is soft? You can't tell by looking. I've seen case depths anywhere from 0.020" to 0.400". I believe any cam that has a lobe worn through the case should have been replaced LONG ago.
There are many different camshaft designs -- cast, forged, and even powder metal. There are also many different hardening techniques -- such as controlled cooling of the casting, induction hardening, EB remelt hardening, and even through hardening.
I believe the mechanic was talking over his head.
I know how hard I work to make $2400. I'd haul my butt into the garage and get this straightened out for that kind of money.
