There used to be quite a few of these in Central Florida citrus groves. However, since Central Florida is now mostly subdivisions, you don't see too many of these anymore. One of my uncles had a rather large grove in South West Orange County and he had a number of these. If you watch toward the end of the video, you'll see yet another reason most farmers are hard of hearing.

Used to work on a whole bunch of these near Springville, California. They used a 317 CID Ford Industrial Engines swinging a 12 foot constant-pitch prop....

Also used a lot of Chrysler Industrial Hemi's in them too. Many of them are still there and haven't been started in years.

When I was a kid, the wind machines were a normal winter night's noise. Vamco and Orchard Rite are common in Central California. They have the engine on the ground and the propeller also rotates around the tower as it spins.
