I followed the link, it shows some overlap between US and Euro oils.. My question is: What do you guys class as Euro oils? Country of manufacture? ACEA but not API/Dexos? Add pack? 5w30 is 5w30 no matter where you buy it or use it. RIght?

ACEA A3/B4 and European car manufacturer specs.

Not quite. Most of the 5w-30 oils sold in the US are resource conserving, low HT/HS oils. Such oils don't meet the requirements of most Euro manufacturers. On other other hand, a Euro 5w-30 oil will be a thick 30 grade with HT/HS of at least 3.5 cP.

From what i understand US oils are something like ACEA A1/B1 with maximum HTHS of 2.9., and their Euro oils are with minimum HTHS of 3.5.

BMW dealerships should be selling LL04/LL01 Penzoil in a couple of months being that the Castrol contract was not renewed.

In addition to what others mentioned, there are also 5w-30 HDEOs, which are certainly not the same as North American ILSAC type 5w-30 grades.

With Mobil1 0w-40 and Castrol 0w-40 available at Walmart for cheap, it doesn't matter much what Pennzoil does. And Belgian/Germam Castrol 0w-30 at Autozone or PepBoys etc. for more.

Yeah, Castrol obviously figured out that M1 0W40 is killing them in Euro market oil segment bcs of price and availability. It seems Pennzoil still needs some time to come to same conclusion.

According to the PDS, No. http://www.pennzoil.com/wp-content/uploa...sler-en-TDS.pdf
I'm sure it could pass many of the Euro requirements. I would not have any hesitation using it in a Euro car that's spec'd for ACEA A3/B4, though obviously it carries no OEM approvals so a car still under warranty is probably not the smartest application.

BMW are having big problems with oil leaks (according to a tech that used to work at our place and is now a BMW tech), I wonder if that has something to do with the change?

Interesting note: With the BMW 5w-30 (Castrol product) in the sump my valve cover gaskets on the M5 leaked. I was thinking I had to replace them. As soon as I started running M1 0w-40, the leak stopped and hasn't returned shrug That has been a few years now.

It's not beyond the realm of possibility. He said literally every car that comes in for a service that's about 3-4 years or older he's guaranteed to find oil leaks.

Naw. Gasket leaks are common for BMW'S. Especially valve cover and where the oil filter housing is attached to the block. I think it's the choice of material. Who knows... I think the leak around the oil filter housing is a result of over tightening the oil filter cap.
