Will a filter with a bypass valve work in an engine with a block mounted bypass?

Well, I over did it when purchasing some totalgrip filters at Advance Auto earlier in the month. I was buying them for my Saturn, my Sentra, and my parent’s car. I lost track of what I bought. Now, I have too many oversized filters for my Saturn with a bypass valve. I went to the Purolator website, and these filters have the same thread pitch and threads as the one for the Sentra. The gaskets and base plates are identical. The Sentra filters are a little shorter (about 3/4 inch) and do not have a bypass in them. There is a lot of clearance in the engine compartment for a longer filter. Will it matter if I use the Saturn oversized filter (AA3600) on my Sentra? Is there some important information I am not aware of? Thanks for the help!

No problem.

If the filter bypass is set much higher then the engine bypass, the filter bypass won't ever open.

If it's set lower, no biggie either, because your bigger filter won't be opening it as often as if it were a standard sized filter.

Right. Most of the 3 party filters listed for my truck, in place of the PF 1177 that nobody carries, have a bypass valve. Oversize never hurts unless there is a clearance problem. Remember, engines move around. You don't want it sticking down much further either.

Champion aparently thinks so. Just curious, I didn't know any Nissans didn't need an in-filter bypass?

If it gives ya some peace of mind, some of the Ford Taurus SHO engines (and I'm sure plenty of other rides as well) came with both block and filter bypass valves. I suspect this may be fairly common. Unless there's something like the lack of an anti-drainback valve, or unusual bypass valve pressure setting goin' on, switching to another filter which has an internal bypass is fine, and harmlessly redundant.

I have Alldata. It showed a picture of it being built into the block. I have a 1.6 motor. The 2.0 motor showed it needs a bypass in the filter according to Purolator. I guess it depends on the motor?
