The '00 5.3 takes a different filter than my Mom's '03 5.3 and Dad's '03 6.0.

The new filter can looks shorter.

Why was there a change?

I'm guessing that your 00 takes a PF59 and your Mom and Dad's 03 5.3's take a PF46. In 2003 GM quit using the PF59 and changed to a PF46 which is just a shorter PF59. I guess they figured that with 3000K OCI's that the PF46 provided sufficient filtering and they could save money by using a shorter filter.

'03 also involved repackaging of some components, not every model had room for the PF59, guess it was easier to put PF46's on everything.

Actually there was also a change from the PF44 to PF46(or the other way around). I'm not sure on the reason for this though, but it may be retroactive.
