I have a 1992 Ford Chateau Club Wagon with 5.8 Litre Engine
and heavy duty tow package with 98,000 miles on it.
It is stored in the winter and only gets used about 2000 Miles
per year and gets Once a year oil changes before I put it away
in the fall. This van will eat you out odf house and home
with the horrendous fuel mileage. I have used Castrol GTX
Pennzoil YB and Pennzoil HM all of which show the oil pressure
gauge varying constantly all over the place. I realize the
factory gauge is not the best in the world but when the needle
is reading below the N in Normal at highway speeds it makes
me nervous. After switching to Valvoline Max Life this problem
has disappeared. This engine holds good oil pressure all the
time. Why would there be such a difference ??

Also I use the Motorcraft FL1A Filter with each change

The oil pressure gauge in my 1993 F150 does the same thing. If its high now just wait it will drop, then for no reason it will spring up to the middle and slowly drop over a period of days or even weeks.

I blame the gauge, not the oil. I'm not worried enough about it to hook up a better gauge to get an accurate reading.

The factory gauge in my Mustang used to do all kinds of exciting things. I replaced the sender.

Mechanical gauge always shows 35-38psi hot at idle.

The stock Ford gauges from that era leave a lot to be desired.

Weird thing I`ve noticed about oil pressure, when I used to use M1 15W50,it`s start out a bit over 60psi at first start of the day, then gradually sink down to around 20psi and stay there. With Valvoline white bottle and Royal Purple, cold start is a bit over 60psi and never gets much below that mark and stays consistent. It never gets low like it did with the M1. Lowest it reads is about 50psi on hot idle.

Very interesting...

Yup, been that way for years now.

But even the senders on the old "real" gauges were inaccurate at best.

Factory gauges are never all that great. If somebody is genuinely concerned, an Autometer Mechanical gauge is the only way to go.

Maxlife 5W30 has a cst of 11.5 which is on the high end of the scale and close to a 40wt. Nonetheless, a very good oil!

Yep. They did it supposedly so people would stop filling up the service bays with cars because the oil pressure gauge moved up and down. Stays in one spot now and most people are happy.
