My 30+ year old air compressor has been on the downhill slide for the last few months-I've had to patch a couple pinhole leaks in the tank and it's pretty much worn out. I thought I'd probably need to replace it at some point since it was struggling to get the tank full (when it didn't leak).
This morning a friend and I attended an estate auction-the gentleman died of a sudden heart attack at 55 years old last April and his widow wanted to move into a smaller home in town. As we were looking over the items to be auctioned I spotted this little gem. It didn't seem to have been used much, so I bid on it. The only other person interested stopped at $100, so I picked it up for $105.
We loaded up our items and after I brought it home and wiped the dust from it, I realized the build year on the data plate is 2012-making it probably less than 6 months old. The gentleman must have purchased it shortly before he died. Doing some quick research it looks like these retail for $500-$650.
I checked the oil, looked it over, plugged it in and it runs like brand new. It's not as large as my old compressor, but the reality is that I'm also not using air tools as often as I did in the past, and I think this one will serve my needs quite well.
I also picked up a box of watches for $5 (it looks like most of them work), and an antique wood case GE radio for $20.
All in all a pretty good day at an auction.
