It likely does both if a small amount makes it past the pistons …
I asked them this question a while back and they mentioned that it may thicken the oil.
Where is this? I remember maybe over a decade ago, they claimed that it was best to wait just before an oil change. They claimed it "depleted motor oil additives" to some degree. But I haven't heard of that being claimed recently.
