Why do some people use Diesal Oils in their cars?

Diesel oil are designed to deal with soot better than most other oils. They have a higher level of detergents, and therefore a higher TBN. The 15w-40's, as a rule, are more shear stable than a 10w-40. As for the newer 5w-30 diesel oils, it is as stated above.

I recently put Amsoil S.A.E. 30 Diesel oil in my dad's Cub Cadet. It seems to run great. Many people run diesel oils in their motorcycles (higher ZDDP levels are good for bike engines). Just because it says Diesel doesn't mean it is only for diesels, just that it is designed for diesel engines. In some cases, a diesel oil is overkill, but that isn't always bad.

So diesal oils have better cleaning ability. With the higher levels of ZDDP, does it mean that it is not recommended for gasoline cars with cat converters? Wouldnt it reduce the lifespan of a cat?

Ken, phosphorus and possibly moly could contaminate the cat in an Asian car. ISLAC GF-3 strictly limits EP and FM additive levels to suit Asian requirments, that would be the spec to look for, imo.

In general much more protection per se and cleaning... they will have cert. specs on the back.... ie SD, SF, SJ, SL (for gasoline). If they don't have the specs dont buy them but most do... gotta read the bottle...
Now, the only drawback I can see, is that they are specifically designed for diesel engines. So if the same properties were put into a design for GASOLINE, maybe it would be better for gasoline... I donno... Been running them for the most part for 20 years and have gone several million miles.... To me they offer better protection for the money... So unless you are racing a car or some super application that calls for another oil, IMO, It will be a good oil to use GAS/DIESEL
