why do NGV's require 20w40?

To prevent the owners from using a gas/diesel motor oil in this natural gas engine.
I see it as a form of idiot-proofing!

Which NGV's specifically? I find it difficult to believe that Ford and Honda, which specify 5W-20 to the exclusion of all else in gasoline engines would specify 20W-40 in the same engines fueled with natural gas.

The basic question is: how does NG blowby affect oil chemistry. Maybe the forum's tribologists can answer that question.

NG stationary engines extensivly used on the NG pipelines in compressor stations spec normal diesel oil. I suspect that this has more to do with the fact that they are modified diesel power plants, than the fact that they are fueled by NG. Operating conditions for these engines are very similar to stationary diesel powerplants.

We run Dual fuel Ford F150's as some of the work fleet. No special oil is used... the same ole mixed fleet oil they use in everything.

Is this true? I thought that they were spark-ignition just like a regular car? The Civic NGV is basically just a modified Civic motor..at least that's what I thought

The ones I have had to drive are Spark ignited. You have to run a tank of regular unleaded at least every 1k miles to keep everything running proper. Natural gas just doesn't run well imo. Low BTU and you have to sacrifice alot of space to haul the fuel around.. For stationary engines feeding off of pipelines this would not be an issue but seeing how they run exclusively off of the gas perhaps they need a special formulation. Differetn animals I am sure.

I see some natural gas powered taxis (Ford Crown Vic) here in San Francisco. They are as zippy as all other cabs.
