Why do Honda air filters have an oily coating?

Is this coating to capture additional contamination or some type of preservative? I'm thinking possibly both? You can see the oily reside in the wrapper the air filter comes in from Honda.

As someone who has 2 Honda vehicles, I can assure you that is not the case lmao

Yes, it's supposed to trap more dirt.

Fram and Purolator used to offer that kind of air filter in the aftermarket (Fram TG/Ultra and P1 air filters), but they are phasing out the oily coating.

Not really, no.

Honda fits are lightly oiled. Well-intentioned K&N owners often over oil the filters.

Fram used to have an "extreme duty" air filter that was also paper and lightly oiled.

So, then we get into the debate if K&N is really necessary, or does anything. Or if it only looks cool.. which it does.

They do get very dirty during winter months with salt and the dirt/salt mix due to the dust . Change it in mid > late May when roads are cleared from the rains . Have a 2nd generation FIT .

Except the Honda is a good filter with oil for added efficiency. The K&N is a poor filter that needs oil to have any efficiency.
