Why are all phones gigantic?

I had a Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini which was 4"
which was quite sufficient for my needs (messaging, google maps, occasional browsing and watching how-to videos)

I guess I am in the minority that would buy a phone under 5"
Would have bought the 2022 Iphone SE if it had a inch bigger screen.

It's all about "immersive" content consumption.
That or working and trying to look at plans on your phone so you're not destroying them shoving them in and out your vest, trying to carry a bunch of equipment around. Here are some of the easier to read examples of stuff I would be using my phone to view. The smaller the phone, the more zooming in to see. I couldn't quickly find any of the more difficult to read plans I sometimes am trying to read.
I'm probably in the minority but for me it's a mini computer which is used all day long for viewing documents, email, phone calls, texting the project manager, using as a WiFi hotspot, calculator, unit converter, music player etc.
So the bigger the better in my situation. I went for basically the largest available (6.8"). Typically the bigger the phone the better the battery life when being used heavily.
For people that just need a smartphone to cover the basics there are lots of phones 6.1" or smaller available. though.

I’m in trouble if I don’t go apple on my next device. I have the iPhone XR and personally the phones too big for my comfort. I’d have to go with an iPhone mini unless I can find an android with the right dimensions for my comfort.
All the current iPhones are smaller (shorter) than the XR. Not by much, but they are. The SE is even smaller, of course.

The XR is an oddly proportioned, thick and heavy device. I now have an iPhone 12 and I don't know why anyone would want anything smaller, it's sized nicely and relatively light. Personally I think Motorola hits the sweet spot with a 6.7" 20:9 aspect ratio on the 5G One Ace, it's easy to hold, carry in your pocket with plenty of screen real estate for how people actually use smartphones. The Motorola is by far my favorite device and I can buy like 5 of them for one iPhone 12.

My Pixel 5a @ 6.34 inches is just right for me. A larger screen would be desirable but cumbersome.

No, this isnt correct.
The iPhone 13 mini is a smaller phone and it is very noticeable. I think Schandyman would like it. The iPhone 13 mini is the smallest smart phone on the market.
What is great about it is that the iPhone 13 mini is not only smaller then the SE 2022 but the iPhone mini screen is larger than the SE 2022.

Its really amazing how Apple squeezed everything about the iPhone 13 into the iPhone mini 13. I think if Apple would hang in there for a few more years the phone might catch on. AS of right now, rumors (there are always Apple rumors) say this will be the last year of Mini iPhones, Apple surprised it didnt catch on as much as they thought. Again, Rumors but who knows. Others says they will merge the SE and Mini together.
Either way, I think would be a mistake but what do I know, the mini is REALLY an awesome phone for someone that wants a cool looking amazingly good phone.

I’d just like to be able to one hand text again, not that can’t on the XR it’s not comfortable or do I have a firm grip.

A large phone certainly helps with reading blueprints and schematics. I started to use my iPad in my line of work and its awesome, no need to zoom in.

Looks like 6.5" is the new minimum height for just about every phone available now. From what I can tell other than the iPhone mini and S22 perhaps the 5.5" region of real estate no longer exists. I don't care as much but my wife with smaller hands refuses to go larger because it's too awkward to hold and use with one hand. Hoping more options in what I would consider a normal size become a available again.
The iphone 13 and Pro is 5.78" long.

You can still buy the old school flip phones if you look hard enough.
Don't have the capability that some folks seem to demand but for internet I have a desktop at work, a desktop at home and a laptop for my travel at hotels.. and the only other times I am driving... so ..
