Not looking to turn this into a thick vs thin sword fight, just curious who's using thicker oils.

Currently using Syntec 5w-50 in my old Saturn.

I was running 20w50 in my BMW because thats what the manual specs for dino. Synthetic 20w50 was too thick judging by my UOAs. I'm now trying synthetic 10w40. So thicker is not always better from what I'm learning

I used Syntec 5W-50 for about 100k miles (10k mile OCIs) in my Audi with very good results in temps from a little under freezing to over 100 F.

20w50 dino for the summer in my 1990 Nissan. Local temperature is always above 50F, have 110k on the 15 year old engine. I switch to 10w30 or 10w40 for California's "winter".

I put syntec 5w50 in my sister-in-laws 92 Lumina that has 102k on it,will be in there from april to november...I paid a buck a quart for the stuff and didn't know what to use it in,so I guess her car is the quinea pig...

Ancient history but...I bought a Toyota Corolla new in 79 and kept it until 1990. Around 150K and ran fine when I sold it. Never used anything but GTX 20W-50 in Tennessee year 'round. I didn't know better then, but no issues. You know how cold it can get here. Not anything I'd recommend now, though.

I only sold the little car because the dash, seat upholstery, and paint were disintigrating.

ToyotaNSaturn,
I'm running 3 quarts Chevron Supreme 5w-30 SL/GF-4 and 1 quart Havoline 5w-30 SL/GF-3 in the same 96 Saturn SL2 right now. It didn't seem to have any effect on the sludged up engine, but it does seem noticably quieter upon startup. I think this is mainly because of the warmer weather recently as well as the failed Fram filter that I replaced.

Michael

I have run 20W50 dino in my '91 Subaru XT6. It has ~101K miles on it and leaks a little. The 20W50 may have slowed it, but it thrashed my mileage so I quit.

I used to use a 15W50 oil in my Ferrari 95 F355B. I track this car a lot, and while I had no particular issues with this oil, I found that I would leave the track with the oil at a stabilized 285dF temperature. Switching to a 5W40 oil under the same track conditions (105dF) resulted in leaving the track with only 260dF oil temperatures. In addition the idle oil pressure was higher with the ligher oil when leaving the track; Cold start performance is better faster to start (1.0 seconds rather than 1.5 seconds of cranking) and faster to cold idle oil pressure (2 seconds versus 4 seconds):

So, I quit using the heavy stuff, but continue to pay plenty of attention to the HTHS numbers in the oils I choose to go in this car.

I used to use Castrol 5w50 in my 340 dart which gets started at least every two weeks year round. And the lifters would rattle for a few seconds on start up after sitting for two weeks.I switched to Mobil-1 15w50 and the rattling completly went away no matter how long the car sits.I drive it around 300 miles a year and went 2years on the last oil change. Now Mobil-1 is all I use in both cars

I was using Kendall GT-1 20w50, in my 1976 Buick Electra 455V8, for about 20 years.

I now use Mobil Delvac Super 1300 15w40 HDEO, in the Buick and my 1979 BMW 733i. Good Oil!

I,ve been using 20-50 in the summer months in my MB 190 2.3 for the last 8 years. In the fall I'll switch to 10-40 and around Christmas, a mix of 5-30 and 10-30. If were in a deep freeze, all 5-30. By March it's 10-40 and now Iv'e got 20-50 in it for the last 3 weeks. I'll put about 6,000 miles on my 190 traveling to sporting events this summer.(May to Sept). I have this theory that running higher viscosity oil the this car is helping my timing chain and wear guides last longer. I currently have 158,000 miles on the car and it runs identical to the day I bought it 8.5 years ago.(30mpg on a trip). Looking back, 5-40 synthetic Mobil-1 would have been great year round and saved me a ton of oil changes, but I'm sticking to my plan. My 92 Escort likes 5-30 and my Astro van gets 10-30 year round.

I'm currently back to using Syntec 5-50 with LC after trying Delvac 1 5-40, GC 0-30, and BC 5-40.

It has the lowest consumption, smoothest running and comparable fuel economy.

Two cars in my family run on 10w-60:

- Volvo V40 (2 liter turbo) - Castrol TWS 10w-60
- Nissan Primera (2 liter NA) - Castrol 10w-60 (not sure if TWS or RS)

Hey Vlad,

Do you run that year-round? What are your winter low temps in Philly? I was running 15W-50 in my '90 but I was too worried during that first winter (0°F startups) to refill with the same stuff.

Thanks!

I use 10W-40 in winter. It gets down to 0°F here in Philly.

The car really likes 20W-50 though... I used to run 10W-30 year around until I came across a TSN from SAAB.
