Hi guys,

Just want to know how many people use Amsoil 5W-40 in their cars. What kind of car/engine you use it in? What's your opinion & feeling of it? How does it compare to M1 0W-40 or SUV 5W-40? Are we going to see any UOAs?

Thanks,

I think it's good oil. I've used it in my car and it ran well considering it was a 40wt oil.

I've got it in a 90 BMW 325i right now. Switched from the Series 2000 20W-50, which I felt was too heavy. Picked up 2.3 mpg since and the car starts way easier now. For my use, it's probably a little too thin but it's what I had on hand when I decided to change the oil.

I'll be putting it in the 850 Volvo soon. The 10W-40 with LC still has life in it, but I can't wait anymore

I assume nobody else use it???

It's been discussed here a few months ago in great details as the next best thing for any engine. Now people backing out of it? Well I guess it's all just part of oil market.

I have it in my '01 Jeep Cherokee with a 4.0 (47k miles). Good oil pressure and my mileage is near EPA highway in 90/10 hwy/city mixed driving (while using FP of course). I bet I could squeeze a few tenths of a MPG by using a thinner oil, but it's not worth it to me.

My wife's '99 outback (165k miles) will be getting it once the current Auto-Rx rinse cycle is done.

I will probably do an analysis on both vehicles at 7500 miles to see if I can go to 10k or beyond. I spend too much time on BITOG!

Euro schmuro, it's Amsoil's only 5w-40! I hope the Euro designation doesn't discourage too many folks from trying it.

MS and I do differ (well last time I checked we are both human) - I definitely recommend the 5W-40 for many applications. As I stated it's a good oil (the price isn't that bad), and if I weren't still running a decent OCI I would have it in now!

PS The oils I don't recommend are the S2K 0W-30 (too expensive, just OK oil) and the whole XL line.

Personally I don't think I will ever use it. It's just another niche product that is also covered by at least 2 other oils in Amsoil's line.

For 1 the 10w40 AMO has is more shear stable, and is less expensive. Secondly the Series 3000 5w30HDD has a much better additive package and base stock combo. So if I'm looking for the best I would use that.

Even the 10w30 ATM is at least as good at a less cost. I will only sell the 5w40 to those that ask for it or need it becuase the book calls for it. If they ask my "opinion" I'll recommend something else base on other criteria.

Hope this helps,

Michael

Pablo: No S2K due to cost

The Series 3000 is about the same price do you use that. The reason I ask is my son's F 150 inline 6 PU he is using Castrol GTX 10/40 now I would like to try the HDD-1G instead.

Although I think the S3K HDD is still priced high (exact same price as S2K 0W-30), I think it is a more worthy long drain oil. There is some similarity in base oil chemistry, however the add pack and the detergent/dispersants in the S3K are much more robust.

I wonder if AMSOIL dealer's opinion on this board are based on facts or their instinct!

I hear people saying S2K is worse than S3K or 10w40 is better than 5W40 etc. do you guys have facts to back up your opinions or you are just saying something to increase your number of posts?

Viscosity, sheer stability or TBN does not fully expose an oil. Do we know for a fact what additives AMSOIL uses in their different oils? 5W40 European Formula passes many oil tests that other AMSOIL dont pass!

I am NOT here to offend anyone but there are so much contradictory opinions on this board that I have hard time differentiating facts from fiction.

Back to the topic.

I am currently using AMSOIL 5W40 in my 1990 VW golf with 260K on the clock. this is the first synthetic oil this car has ever seen. I will do an UOA after 18,000 KM to see how it holds up.

Kickster I can assure you that my information on S2K vs. S3K is based on fact!!! (lots of UOA's, and other data) I don't just make this crap up. Jeez. (your comment about # of posts is offensive, sorry)

However, I can honestly say that I have insufficient real world information on the 5W-40. And I really don't know where MS is coming from, but he is entitled to his opinion.

This is all just hot air until we have more UOA's.

It will be nice once we have some UOA's to base
our debate on. I am doing my part by driving about 400 miles a week. I should post a UOA at 7500 miles about 12 weeks from now.

IMO Amsoil should get their oils certified and spend the money. "Recommended for" is not good enough for many and to ease customer concerns and fully stand by their product, they should certify them. Thats my opinion. I've read old posts regarding how Amsoil purchases additive packages from a supplier that already meet these specs. Thats one possibility but I believe they should do more.

Some UOA's should be coming soon. Mine won't be for awhile, but some folks have it in and are over 5K miles (they aren't hard core like us, so I'll need to sample and pay the analysis myself)

I just put 10,000 miles on some Amsoil 5w-40 in my 2003 Jetta TDI, I'll send in a sample this weekend.

Anymore feedback from users?

I just got my UOA back on Amsoil 5W40 in my 96 Jeep 4.0-however I'm currently traveling and won't be able to post them until later this week.
